Chiang Mai is located some 700 km. from Bangkok, Chiang Mai is the principal city of northern Thailand and capital of the province if the same name Poppularly known as "The Rose of the North" and with an enchanting location on the bank of the Ping River, the city and its surroundings are blessed with stunning natural beauty and a uniquely indigenous cultural identity. Founded in 1296 by King Mengrai as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom, Chiang Mai has had a long and mostly independent history, which has to a large extent preserved a most distinctive culture.

 | Doi Inthanon National Park, Chiang Mai
This national park which covers an area of 482 square kilometers is located on Doi Inthanon, Thailand's highest mountain which is 2,565 meters above sea level. Located between Mae Chaem, Mae Wang and Chom Thong, the park is comprised of the largest tract of upper mountain forest which ranges across Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, and ends in Northern Thailand. The mountain ranges gave birth to the main tributaries of the Ping river and formed the beautiful waterfalls, namely Siriphum, Wachirathan, Mae Pan, Mae Klang and Mae Ya. The moist and dense evergreen forest is abundant with lichens and wild orchids. The park is also a paradise for bird lovers. Visiting Doi Inthanon is possible throughout the year however, the best period for viewing the waterfalls is May through November while the best period for viewing wild flowers is December through February and for ornithologists is November through March. visit the twin pagodas Pra Mahathat Napametaneedon and Pra Mahathat Noppapol Phumisiri. The Royal Thai Air Force and the people of Thailand erected these beautiful structures to commemorate the 5th cycle birthday (one cycle being 12 years) of their Majesties the King and Queen.
